Local businesses are encouraged
to plan ahead for going smoke-free.
The move follows the signing of
a smoke free charter by Guildford's
Local Strategic Partnership.
By Summer 2007, work and enclosed
public places in England will be
completely smoke free by law, please
see Going
Smokefree [.pdf]. For more information
at the local level go to Smokefree
Surrey and nationally the Smoke
Free England website.
But businesses have no need to
fear the legislation.
Over 34% of people surveyed in
Guildford and Waverley said that
they would use restaurants and cafes
more if a law were introduced. This
means that businesses could actually
benefit from going smoke free.
A first step will be for organisations
to look at developing or improving
their smoke free policy. Organisations
can get free policy guidance and
advice from West Surrey Stop Smoking
Service by calling 01483 510460.
